GOAL star Richard Dunne believes the top-four clubs might have their multi-million-pound players but Villa have got a far more priceless commodity – team spirit.
Dunne may have been a part of the Villa set-up for only a few weeks but he has already seen something special about the squad and says: “You can’t buy what we’ve got.’’
The Republic of Ireland defender is also convinced that what Villa have in abundance is attitutude and that is something moneybags chairmen cannot buy, no matter how many millions they have at their disposal.
Dunne, who joined Villa in the summer in a £6 million move from Manchester City and has already won over the hearts and minds of Villa supporters with two goals in two games, believes seeing the way Villa have taken points from the top clubs underlines his views.
Martin O Neill’s men have taken threee points off Liverpool at Anfield, three off Chelsea and a point against his former club Manchester City, who, after a massive summer spending spree, are expected to be there or there abouts at the end of the season.
Dunne said: “People are always on about the bigger clubs who spend money, money, money on players but it is all down to the attitude of the team and the attitude here is second to none. You can’t really buy what we have got here.”
He continued: “The team spirit in this club is special and it is spilling out onto the pitch and into the performances and, as long as we keep working hard, we will be a match for any side.”
Dunne may have only been a Villa player for a month but is already a firm hit with the fans and popular with his team-mates while his relationship with his centre-back partner James Collins had been instantaneous.
“For me it is about the results and this is a good place to be,” Dunne said.
He admitted he had been forced out of the door at City with the arrival of multi-million pound defenders Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott but had no regrets since his arrival at Villa Park.
“From day one since I arrived the dressing room has been brilliant,” he said.
“You speak to everyone in this club every day and I am really enjoying it.
“It makes everything easier when you are instantly making friends.”
The close-knit dressing room and team spirit is very much a factor in the club’s rise this season which sees them now sitting comfortably in sixth place in the Premier League table ahead of the meeting with Wolves at Molineux at the weekend.
“I think you can see the team spirit we have here when we go out and play games,” Dunne said
“The work we are putting in for each other is really coming through.
“I left City and there was no point in moping, in being sulky about it. I wanted to try and blend in here as soon as I could and the lads have been really good and accepted me.
“James (Collins) and Stephen (Warnock) have come straight in too and just look at the team performances.
“This team plays with real heart on the pitch and in the dressing room. It has gone really well and long may it continue.” |

PROUD Aston Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov has admitted it is “a great honour” to lead Martin O’Neill’s die-hard troops.
Villa once again did the claret and blue army proud on Saturday by bouncing back from a goal down to see off title contenders Chelsea.
But there was no-one prouder than midfielder Petrov, who played the entirety of Villa’s sixth league victory of the campaign.
The Bulgaria international was always wary of the silverware-hungry Londoners.
However, the 30-year-old believes his side were more than deserving of the three points.
“I feel proud to captain a side like that – a side that never gives up, a side that wants to win and a side that wants to be counted. It’s a great honour,” enthused Petrov.
“They were 1-0 up without ever really creating any danger against us. But we came back and at 2-1 we had a few more chances.
“We were obviously under pressure in the last few minutes but you expect that against a top team like them.
“But overall I think we deserved to win the game. We look a lot more solid, a lot more composed and we look much stronger.
“You can’t switch off against them. Their mentality is to play right until the end.
“They kept pushing and kept pushing and we had to be very organised and solid. I think we did that.
“You expect them to have chances and sometimes you need luck as well. We had the luck but we deserved it.”
